Why Can’t My AC Keep Up With The Heat?

If you can’t take the heat, turn on your AC!

The last thing anyone wants to find out is that their AC can’t beat the heat. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence that requires a lot of air conditioning repair calls in the summer. If you’ve discovered that your air conditioner can’t keep up with the heat, there are a few potential reasons. Just remember to call us for air conditioning repair in Shreveport, LA.

Dirty Condenser Coils

Your outdoor unit houses the condenser, the part of your HVAC responsible for heat transfer. When the coils become dirty, they lose their ability to effectively move heat outdoors. The result is a house that feels too warm, even when you drop your thermostat by several degrees.

Without the ability to transfer heat properly, your entire system can begin to feel the strain. This can spell disaster for your blower motor, which supplies air to turn your AC fan. Poor circulation throughout the home is a common sign your system needs a check-up.

A Dirty/Clogged Air Filter

The air filter is often a surprisingly simple fix for homeowners who are experiencing poor AC function. The good news is that replacing yours can resolve a lot of seemingly complex problems. Make sure that you replace your air filter every 1 to 3 months.

Each home is different — some houses may need to replace their air filters more regularly, especially if they’re running the AC often and there’s a lot of dust or dirt in the outside air.

Outdated System

HVACs don’t last forever, and by the end of their lifespan, you’ll notice the difference in performance. Even a well-maintained unit will eventually stop working as it should. If your system is between 10 to 15 years old, you might want to schedule a call with a technician to talk about upgrading your AC.

The good news is that replacing your AC with a more energy-efficient model will boost cooling and save you money on bills!

Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant leaks are cause for an emergency air conditioning repair. Although newer units don’t use Freon anymore, all refrigerants are still bad to breathe in. If you notice any pools of liquid around your condenser, or hear a hissing sound when you run your AC, call a professional right away.

Left unaddressed, refrigerant leaks can cause your system to stop cooling altogether. You’ll turn your settings as low as possible, only to get nothing but warm air.

Miscalibrated Thermostat

Thermostats can make mistakes if they fall out of calibration with your system. Temperature changes outdoors affect internal readings, and if your thermostat thinks it’s cooler than it really is, your AC won’t run efficiently.

A technician can recalibrate your thermostat so it gains accurate readings. You may also consider replacing yours or even moving it to a different part of the house.

Exterior-facing walls, and spots near doors and windows, tend to cause more issues with readings than interior locations.
